KTM displays 390 Adventure, 790 Adventure at IBW 2019: Former to launch in January 2020
KTM has showcased some interesting motorcycles at the ongoing India Bike Week (IBW) 2019. Out of the entire range, two of the most talked-about models are the highly awaited 390 Adventure and 790 Adventure.
KTM has showcased the highly-awaited 390 Adventure at the ongoing India Bike Week (IBW) 2019. Alongside, the Austrian motorcycle maker has displayed the 790 Adventure at the event. Based on the popular 390 Duke, the 390 Adventure gets a similar all-LED headlamp along with coloured instrument cluster that supports smartphone connectivity as well through Bluetooth. In order to justify its off-road character, the 390 Adventure gets knuckle guards, clear windscreen, engine sump guard and a higher ground clearance. The bike has been fitted with 19-inch front and 17-inch rear alloy wheels and comes to a halt with the help of 320mm disc brake up front along with a 230mm disc at the rear. Dual-channel ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) comes as standard.
The bike also gets a Supermoto mode that deactivates the ABS on the rear wheel. Engine on the 390 Adventure is the same 373cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that does duty on the 390 Duke. The fuel-injected motor is good for shedding out respective power and torque outputs of 43hp and 37Nm. Moreover, the bike gets a segment-first traction control system for better safety. The KTM 390 Adventure will go on sale in India in January 2020 and the company is expected to announce the prices soon.
Now coming to the second attraction at KTM stall, the 790 Adventure was also displayed and it brings a healthy possibility that the bigger ADV will be launched in India soon. Powering the bike is a 790cc parallel-twin engine that is good for producing a maximum power output of 79hp. The 790 Adventure gets features like Traction Control (MTC) with lean angle system, switchable ABS and multiple riding modes. The KTM ADV will go up against the likes of the upcoming Triumph Tiger 900 and BMW F850GS in the segment.

KTM 125 Duke Pips Yamaha MT-15 On The Sales Chart
The baby Duke has added another feather to its cap, overtaking the MT-15 on the sales chart for the first time
Since its launch, the MT-15 has been raking in some good numbers for Yamaha. In the process, it has constantly overtaken its rival, the 125 Duke. However, for the first time in the past few months, the 125 Duke has finally pipped the MT-15 in terms of sales.

The Austrian bike maker sold 2,228 units of the baby Duke, compared to 2,048 units of the MT-15 in the month of May. Yes, this isn’t that big of a difference, but this shows us how popular the baby Duke is. But the coming months could be a testing time for the Austrian bike maker, as the 125 Duke has seen several price hikes in the past few months, which could affect its sales. On the other hand, Yamaha is trying to increase footfalls in its showrooms. The company had recently announced that existing and new MT-15 customers will get a complimentary riding jacket or a helmet.
Given how things are positioned right now, it will be interesting to watch the KTM 125 Duke and Yamaha MT-15 rivalry over the next few months.

KTM beats Harley Davidson in sales – Now aims to overtake Kawasaki
KTM AG, the Austrian motorcycle company, owned jointly by KTM Industries AG and Bajaj Auto Limited, is on the brink of entering the list of top three bikes makers of full sized motorcycles. The company which has surpassed Harley Davidson Inc as the leading motorcycle maker outside of Asia, has now trained its sights on scaling past Kawasaki Motors.
Stefan Pierer is at the helm of KTM after having taken over in 1991 and is there to this day 28 years later. He has steered the company to great heights allowing the Austrian manufacturer to surpass Harley Davidson, outdoing the latter in terms of sales in 2018 after selling 2,61,000 motorcycles globally overtaking Harley by approximately 35,000 units.
KTM sales have quadrupled in what is seen as a shrinking two wheeler market. The company has introduced new designs and is paying extra attention to Asia. The company now targets sales of 4,00,000 units by 2022 which means they will soon overtake Kawasaki Motors on the sales charts in their race to break into the top three motorcycle manufacturers.
KTM is still behind Piaggio Group in Europe in terms of sales. In the past year, the leading bikemaker Honda Motors sold 20 million two wheelers while in a second spot, Yamaha Motor’s sales stood at 5.4 million. It will not be smooth for KTM to reach at the top.
But with market dynamics changing, thanks to stricter emission norms and shift to EV tech; Pierer states that the company would have to concentrate more on electric bikes in the future so as to allow the company to compete at a global level.
Where electric two wheelers are concerned, KTM and Bajaj Auto have initiated a project called PTW – Powered Two Wheelers. Under this project, the two automakers will jointly develop electric two wheelers in India with production to commence at the Bajaj plant in Pune by 2022. The development includes a 48 volt electric platform having power outputs of 3Kw (4PS) to 10Kw (13PS) and a budget has already been allocated for the same.
This platform will be used for electric scooters, mopeds and small mopeds and will be used by Bajaj and KTM for their range of electric vehicles. This joint development will benefit both the automakers. KTM will benefit from Bajaj Auto’s experience in low cost manufacture while Bajaj Auto will gain from KTMs earlier endeavours in the electric two wheeler segment. Bajaj is all set to launch its first electric bike under the Urbanite brand later this year, as the e-scooter has been spied testing.
KTM already sells electric two wheelers in some global markets one of which is called the KTM e-Ride. This bike offers peak power output of 18 kW which is much higher than that which will be offered by other electric two wheelers set to be produced in India.
